AFD Responds to House Fire

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 05:38 - FROM CHILHOWIEFIRE.ORG Engine 252, Tanker 253, and Medic 258 responded to the 200 block of Cold Springs Road for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, units found a two story residential structure with the attic and roof fully involved. Due to the rural location of the residence, firefighters did not have access to hydrants for a water supply. This dwelling was originally an old log home from the 1800’s which was built with logs up to 18” in diameter. Upgrades to the dwelling had added framing and wood shingle siding to parts of the structure plus additional rooms. This presented problems of the fire hiding in the original part of the structure with limited access. The siding was removed for crews to access the original logs. Temperatures were once again below freezing which added to the difficulty of keeping crews safe. Overhaul was completed and the last unit cleared the call at 11:26.

Smyth County Sheriff's Dept., Chilhowie PD, and VDOT also assisted. The call was cleared at 15:00.
